Jadeite and Floral

My Jadeite collection is steadily growing and a few weeks ago I came across a vintage McKee canister - on sale - that I couldn't resist!

At first look, I thought it was a Jadeite flower pot since it was missing it's lid, but after some research, I discovered it's true identity! McKee was the first company to start producing Jadeite and this particular type of canister most likely sat on someone's countertop and held sugar or flour.

Although I felt bad about filling my new find with dirt, I still planned on using the canister as a flower pot. It was too perfect and an Amaryllis would look awesome in it! So far, I've not used any of my other vintage Jadeite for food anyways, because I'm kind of a germophobe. Although I've cleaned it all thoroughly, I can't see using it just yet. I mean, someone might have used it as a flower pot and had dirt in it. Yuck. :)

I was laying in bed one night admiring my Martha Stewart sheets and thinking about my new Jadeite canister when inspiration hit. My sheets have some coral, pink, and green flowers on them...and I had just bought some faux coral and pink flowers to make a flower arrangement for my bedroom. Why not put them in my Jadeite canister?!? Perfect!

Faux floral arrangements are really so easy and quick to make and this one was no different. I just got one of those green floral foams and stuck my flowers in it! Voila! Done! And it looks so beautiful!

I started a full on makeover on my master bedroom over a year ago, and with this simple little project, it's almost complete! Almost! But is any room really ever truly finished?

The supplies: my Jadeite canister, floral foam, and some pretty pink peonies. I cut the peony stems down and removed the leaves.

I put the floral foam in the bottom of the canister.

And stuck the flowers in the foam. Remember to measure the flower stems in regards to your vessel so they are not too short or too tall.

Filled in with the remaining flowers...

I simply added the leaves in wherever there were open spots between the flowers.

All done in about five minutes or less! And it looks classy and professional!

I needed something pretty on my nightstand!

They are so gorgeous!

New carpet, bedskirt, and curtains oh my!

The great master bedroom makeover continues! Finally, after almost seven years we have new carpet!

You would not believe the difference it makes! The old green carpet is gone and in it's place is a magnificent medium grey color called "Ink Spot."

I also picked up a new bed skirt. The bed just looked unfinished without one. You could see the supports underneath and some of my junk I had under there. Now it's all hidden and looks much more polished.

I had originally been thinking about making my own bedskirt. I had seen so many cute ones on Pinterest, but in the end I bought a cheap, yet classy looking grey cotton one from Walmart. I mean, does a tulle bedskirt really belong on the bed of an adult married couple? I think not. I'll save that for if we ever have a little girl!

We also got a new comforter for our bed, but I have been waiting until I found the perfect curtains to match in order to bust it out. I just picked up some curtains from Pier 1 Imports and I'm still trying to decide if they are the ones. I think they might be!

My master bedroom is definitely getting more glamorous every step of the way! Hopefully, I'll be able to do a full room reveal soon! Check out my blog archives or use the search function if you've missed any of my previous bedroom updates!

And don't forget to follow along with my daily adventures on Instagram @ sweethome.indiana!

The old icky green carpet. This carpet had definitely seen better days! There was a giant purplish stain (thankfully, mostly hidden under my bed) from when we painted our room last time and my husband knocked over the can of paint. Oops. That's why we painted before we got new carpet!

Here it is! Ink spot! I'm banning all shoes on this carpet from here on out! It looks so glorious!

It looks really good with the Solitary State grey paint.

Here's my bed without it's skirt on. It really needed something!

This bedskirt is exactly what I wanted. Plain, unassuming, and classic.

This looks much better!

These are Grey Moorish Tile Curtains from Pier 1. I love them! I am pretty sure I am going to keep them. They are pretty much everything I have been looking for in a curtain!

I was really hoping they worked because after I took them out the package there was no way I was getting them back in.

Of course, I had to get out my new comforter to see how it went with everything. I Love it!!! I can't wait to put the finishing touches on the room!

Stay tuned for the final reveal!

Let there be light!

After finding the best headboard ever, I felt the next logical step in my master bedroom makeover were new lamps.

Actually, just matching lamps. If I could find the carbon copy of my beloved Eiffel Tower lamp I'd probably have gone that route, but Target doesn't sell it anymore.

I had gotten a lamp for my husband's side of the bed several years ago as a replacement - after he broke the one he had -  that went along with my vision of a glam bedroom perfectly. I figured that I would just get another one to match for my side of the bed. Of course, this would end up being a much more difficult task than I'd imagined.

Turns out his lamp was a "medium" sized lamp and they don't sell that size anymore! So, I had two options. I could either purchase two new lamps that look identical to the one that we already had - just bigger - or go a different route altogether.

I love the lamp that we already have. It's an acrylic stacked ball lamp, and it just epitomizes glam to me, which is the look that I am going for with this room. Once you get an idea in your head that you love, it's hard to settle for anything else.

So guess what. I ended up getting two brand new large sized stacked ball lamps. And I got a hell of a deal on them too! Almost half off! Gotta love Target! They actually look even better than the medium sized one. Things always have a way of working out for the best!

My old Eiffel Tower lamp. I've had it for probably fifteen years or more! Je t'aime! But it was time for a change. I can probably find another spot for it somewhere else in my house.

I had to get new lamp shades too and I found these off white "Shell" colored ones that match my headboard perfectly!

It's amazing what a couple of new lamps can do for your room! It's really starting to come together!

And check out the flowers my husband got me! Quite possibly the most beautiful bouquet ever! Thanks, honey!

Finally! A headboard!

At long last I have come across the perfect headboard for my bed! It is everything I wanted: upholstered, off-white, and most importantly, cheap!

If you have looked at the prices of most upholstered headboards you have seen how ridiculously expensive they are. Most start at several hundred dollars and can stretch into the thousands. I paid less than $140 for mine! And, it's king size to boot! I got it at Walmart (online) of all places! They actually have a lot of really nice looking things online!

When we got married almost eight years ago, and were trying to make our house our own, we went looking at all the usual suspects - department store furniture. I didn't like any of it. It was too cookie cutter and traditional for my tastes. Add to that, my husband wanted a wooden sleigh bed and I wanted a wrought iron bed. There was no compromising. The years passed, headboardless.

Enter Pinterest!

I saw all the pins about making your own upholstered headboard for cheap, and I thought, "I can do that!" I had also been in love with this really glam Hayworth mirrored furniture at Pier One that would go perfectly with an upholstered headboard. (Not that I could afford it, but I was trying to visualize my dream bedroom!)

At this point my husband broke down and told me just to do whatever I wanted. Upholstered headboard it was!

Never one to jump into anything quickly without considering all possible options, I started researching upholstered headboards online and came across the one I have now! It was too good a deal to pass up. I was a little nervous about making my own anyways.

It may have taken seven plus years for it to come to fruition, but the right piece finally found us!

 (And my husband loves it!)

Before. This picture embarrasses me to no end.

This looks so much better! I finally feel like I have an adult room. And it goes perfectly with the Solitary State grey walls. You can really tell the difference between this pic and the one above! It looks so much brighter now!

Up close. It has a linen-esque quality to it that I was unsure of at first, but I actually really like the texture now. I had originally wanted more of a velvety one, but sometimes you get what you need instead of what you want and it works out perfectly!

I love it so much! It adds quite a bit of glam and elegance to my bedroom and really helps bring the room together. (Obviously, I'm not one to iron my sheets but maybe I should be looking at this pic! Yikes! Oh well, this is real life!)

My puppy approves! (She likes to pose for pictures!)

grey is the new neutral

My master bedroom is getting a makeover! I am painting it grey!

My husband and I chose the color "Solitary State" by Pittsburgh Paints, which is a very light and airy grey.

Our room was two different shades of purple. We had an accent wall painted a darker, dusty purple and the other three walls were painted a lighter, more lavenderish purple. This definitely limited things decor/accent wise.

I really wanted more of a neutral wall color this time. That way, we could change up the accents, such as the comforter or curtains, more easily. Everything goes with grey - the possibilities are endless! Navy blue, pink, coral, turquoise, purple, yellow - just to name a few!

Now that the day is here, I have to admit that I am a little sad to be leaving behind the purples. I mean, I did want those colors at one time, but the room never fully came to fruition the way I had imagined it and I just grew to despise it.

Let me tell you, nothing transforms a room more than a fresh coat of paint!

Edging and fixing some nail pops. It really makes the two purples stand out more than ever! I never really thought there was much of a contrast before.

The new grey! I love it!!! It's so light and bright! I do wish we had white trim, but there are some things you just have to live with!

Next up, new carpet to finally replace this hideous green!
